Ask Alice!

Q:  Our business is having a hard time recycling and composting properly and increasing our waste diversion. Do you have any suggestions?

A:  At Cole Hardware, we have been composting for several years and have found it, combined with our recycling programs, to greatly reduce the amount of trash we produce. Convenience, clear signage and education on where to dispose of waste properly are crucial to maximizing recycling and composting efforts.

Our in-store Recycling and Composting Centers features color-coded cans: blue (paper, cans, hard plastics and cardboard); green (compostables and food scraps); gray (soft plastics); and black (trash). At this time, Cole Hardware accepts soft plastics for recycling from consumers at our stores and encourages businesses to find a proper venue for their soft plastics. Small businesses can pool their soft plastics together for recycling at various outlets throughout the Bay Area. Our partnership efforts with our ACE® warehouse have allowed us to achieve high levels of waste diversion.

We offer color-coordinated Rubbermaid® cans in a 23-quart size for $79.99 for larger businesses or restaurants, and smaller sizes (3.5 gallon to 10.25 gallon), including desktop, for homes and offices from $11.99–21.99. Our Repair Referral Service can hook you up with a skilled craftseperson to customize a countertop of wood, Formica or granite for your business. A countertop with drop holes allows disposed items to reach the proper bin and keeps the area neat.

Visit any of our stores to see our assortment of recycle, compost and trash cans and contact our Home Repair service at 415/753-2653 ext. 3 or homerepair@colehardware.com for customization options.
