Ask Alice!

Q: How can I earthquake proof my home and office?

A:  By living in America’s treasured “Golden State” we are blessed by beautiful weather, scenery and diverse cultures; but we also remain ever wary of the destruction caused by earthquakes. Earthquakes are inevitable, although it’s our choice whether or not to prepare for such events in order to minimize the damage. One thing is for sure: when the ground starts shaking, items that are accustomed to steadiness tend to tip over, fall, roll, smash and crash. But we have good news! There are plenty of great anchoring devices available at Cole Hardware to ensure your china cabinet will stay standing during a tremor.

Assuming the walls aren’t falling, a big mess could be avoided by utilizing QuakeHOLD! Products which specialize in keeping flat screens up and furniture holding its’ ground. QuakeHOLD! also has safety straps that can hold all of your bookcases’ guts in during the shake as well as the “A-Maze-ing Picture Hook” that ensure the wire won’t pop off the hook.

In all seriousness, here are a few beneficial tips toward earthquake proofing:
  • Keep the heavy stuff down low.
  • Use child safety latches on kitchen cabinets and cupboards to ensure less spillage. (Available at Cole Hardware.)
  • Try to avoid putting the bed under a window.
  • Strap down that water heater.
  • Make an emergency plan and practice it at least once.
Certain resources will be extremely useful during a large quake; such as flashlights, first aid kits, and other survival necessities. It is possible to attain 1 to 3 day premade survival packs at your local Cole Hardware. Eton produces a series of windable radio/flashlights approved by the American Red Cross, which would be extremely useful during an emergency.

All in all, earthquakes aren’t something that we should have to worry about on a continuous basis, but preparedness can easily save lives during the inevitable.
