Garden for the Environment - May Classes

May 2008 Classes: all classes will be offered at Garden for the Environment, a half-acre organic demonstration garden in San Francisco on 7th Avenue at Lawton Street. Since its founding in 1990, the garden has operated as a demonstration site for small-scale urban ecological food production, organic gardening, compost education and low water-use landscaping. All classes below

- URBAN COMPOSTING
Saturday, May 3rd | 10AM – 12NOON
Jump-start your spring garden with some homemade compost! Composting encourages beneficial organisms in the soil and can help break the life cycle of plant pests and disease. This fun, hands-on class teaches methods for backyard and worm composting. Come learn what you can do to improve your garden without chemical fertilizers or pesticides!

- EARTHEN OVEN BUILDING
Saturday, May 10th | 10AM – 12NOON
In this workshop we will learn the basics of natural building by constructing a cob oven. This one-day workshop will cover material choices, design options, and build the main chamber of a cob oven. This workshop is $15, although no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Pre-registration required.

- ADVANCED COMPOSTING
Saturday, May 17th | 10AM – 12NOON
You’ve set up your compost bin and made some of that delicious Gardener’s Gold… Join us for this Advanced Composting workshop to learn about DIY compost bin designs, we’ll discuss urban sources for the greens and browns your compost pile needs and learn the science behind Carbon / Nitrogen ratios, both in the pile and of individual materials. This workshop is $5, although no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Pre-registration required.
