A Thirst for the Environment

In the past decade or so, the idea of paying for water and carrying it around in mass produced plastic bottles has become less and less preposterous, and more and more the status quo. One survey fount that in 2006 American consumers spent more money on bottled water than on iPods or movie tickets. But did you know that that pure mountain spring water that you’ve been shelling out the big bucks for is most likely just filtrated tap water? Plus the waste produced by all those single use plastic bottles, it just isn’t sustainable.
So why not save some dough and filter your water yourself? More and more people are doing just that with the ease an convenience of in home water filtration systems such as those manufactured by Brita or PUR (which you can find on the shelves of a Cole Hardware near you). But that’s only the first step.
Now that you’re saving money – why not help save the planet a bit too. Recycle that plastic water bottle you have in your hand or purse, and invest in a reusable water bottle. Don’t be tempted into simply refilling that plastic bottle; they are intended for single use only. When used over an over, that bottle can become a breeding ground for bacteria. Also, bisphenol-A (BPA), a potent hormone disruptor and a chemical found in epoxy resin and polycarbonate plastics (most commonly used in water bottles), can leak into your water, and into your body – that’s the last place you want them. BPA may impair the reproductive organs, have adverse effects on tumors, breast tissue and prostates. BPA can leak into your water through normal use, exposure to heat and cleaning agents. One study even found that detectable levels of BPA may leak into liquids at room temperature as well!
So, what’s the solution? Purchase a water bottle intended for multiple uses; a bottle such as a SIGG water bottle. SIGG is the world wide market leader. Designed and manufactured in Switzerland from a single piece of aluminum, the bottles are beautifully uniform and seamless. The brilliant exterior is due to a solvent-free, eco-friendly, powder-based coating, baked on to create a vibrant finish. For 100 years SIGG has created what many call “simply the best water bottle on the planet.” SIGG bottles are designed to be reusable and are 100% recyclable. The SIGG bottle’s interior lining is a water based, non-toxic coating. This lining is not plastic, it’s a flexible microthin enamel – significantly reducing the likelihood of bacteria build up and eliminating concerns of BPA leaching. So you can drink and breath easy.
If you not sold on the environmental and health benefits of SIGG bottles, consider the fact that they are so beautiful that in 1993 SIGG was incorporated into the collection on the Museum of Modern Art in New York. SIGG is available in over 100 unique sizes and designs from vibrant colors and floral motifs (very big on the ’08 Spring Runways) to rock ‘n roll style skulls, you’ll easily find one to suite your taste.
Look for them on the shelves of your local Cole Hardware (assorted skus, Reg. 14.99 - 39.99).
