Household Hazardous Waste Facility

As many of our customers know, Cole Hardware has partnered with the City of San Francisco as a recycling center for batteries, latex paint and fluorescent bulbs. We’re happy to work with the City to provide this convenience to our San Francisco customers. Often customers inquire as to where they can dispose of other household hazardous waste such as motor oil, solvents, electronics and photochemicals, which must be recycled properly. SF Recycling & Disposal operates a household hazardous waste facility for San Francisco residents with proof of residency for many toxic chemicals and there are other options for motor oil and electronics.

Motor Oil – About 30 garages in San Francisco that will accept up to 5 gallons of used motor oil from City residents. Visit the Waste Facility’s website below for a complete list.

Electronics – The Hazardous Waste Facility, Goodwill and St. Vincent de Paul will accept electronics with some restrictions.

The below listed products must be recycled at the Hazardous Waste Facility. A limit of 15 gallons (or 125 pounds) per day from a household applies and proof of San Francisco residency must be presented.
  • Solvents
  • Charcoal Lighter
  • Pesticides
  • Cleaners
  • Fertilizers
  • Asbestos Asbestos (please see safety precautions on Hazardous Waste Facility website below)
  • Photochemicals
  • Spray Cans
Be safe with your waste and label properly. Transport waste in the rear of your truck or the trunk of your car. The Waste Facility cannot accept firecrackers, ammunition, cyanides, unmarked gas cylinders or large propane cylinders. No containers larger than five gallons in size will be accepted. For more detailed information, contact the Household Hazardous Waste Facility (www.sfhazwaste.com).
