Home Depot Passes Their Final Hurdle...

Wednesday January 16, 2008 is the day that San Francisco finally said “yes” to big box retail. During a long, long hearing in front of the Board of Appeals, Home Depot received the blessing of that body by a 3 to 1 vote, to build their store on Bayshore Blvd.

The “good fight” against big box incursion into San Francisco began in 1984. During that time, community groups, unions, neighborhood associations and coalitions, independent businesses and citizens of our City came together at various times to fight this threat to the efficacy of our neighborhood shopping areas. With varying degrees of intensity the battle raged for twenty-four years. Not bad! Still, Home Depot and their big box cousins are relentless and in the end they have established their foothold. It will be interesting to see what Bayshore Blvd. looks like in ten years. Home Depot might just be the first of many national chains. Look for Target, Lowes and more to join them – let’s hope that local businesses continue to thrive.

Cole Hardware has been at the forefront of just about every battle since 1984, and we will continue to be involved if there are opportunities to alter the growth of big box retail in San Francisco. In the meantime, I would personally like to thank all who have joined us both physically and spiritually along the way. It’s been quite a ride!
