And while labels on national brands of bottled water often show a snow-capped mountain, leading you to believe the water is from a natural spring source, most likely it is filtrated tap water. A strong movement toward plain old tap water is taking place and the City of San Francisco recently made national headlines when it banned the often-expensive practice of serving bottled water to employees. Even fine dining establishments, such as Chez Panisse in Berkeley, are leading this movement by no longer offering bottled flat water. Although bottled water might prove more practical for the on-the-go lifestyle that most Americans live these days, there are alternatives that are just as effective and healthy, since many brands of bottled water have been found to be no healthier or safer than tap water. While the EPA oversees municipal water supplies, the FDA regulates bottled water solely if it sold across state lines—and even then it only regulates the sanitary packaging and requires that the water be as “good” as tap water.
