Cole Hardware Hotline Online
Use our latex paint recycling service!Latex Paint

Cole Hardware is a drop-off point for latex paint recycling. This program is a collaboration with the San Francisco Hazardous Waste Management Program -- the idea is to recycle leftover latex paint rather than dump it down the drain to contaminate The Bay.

The latex paint you drop off at our stores is recycled into usable paint and sold or given away for use by nonprofit organizations. Solids and skins are used as a Portland cement additive. The cans get recycled. Nothing gets thrown out! Here's how you can participate:
  • Bring to any Cole Hardware location latex paint containers that have paint in them. We don't want your empty cans. (Dry, empty metal paint cans are recyclable! Allow empties to dry completely, leave the tops off and put the tops and cans into your recycling bin.)

  • The ORIGINAL label on each can must clearly state "latex," "acrylic" or "water-based" paint. No handwritten labels will be accepted.

  • Each can must have its original lid, and it must be on tightly. No leaky containers, please!

  • You must be a San Francisco resident to use this program (and not a commercial user of paint). Bring your I.D. and be prepared to give us your address.

  • Limit your drop-offs to no more than 10 gallon-size containers (or 40 quart-size containers or a combination of both) at a time. Containers are counted by size, not by the volume of paint they contain.

  • When you get to any of Cole Hardware's four stores, proceed directly to the customer service desk with your paint. Please stick around until the required paperwork has been completed!

  • Please, no brushes or rags!

  • Household batteries (alkaline and carbon)
  • Copper and brass scrap metal, such as keys, bathroom and plumbing fixtures.
  • CFLs, tubes up to 8 feet, U- and D-shaped tubes. Drop-off limit is ten bulbs.
  • Empty ink jet and laser cartridges. Make sure they're in a platic bag to avoid leakage.
