The Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center (BHNC) strives to empower neighborhood residents to preserve the ethnic, cultural and economic diversity of Bernal Heights. From our small office space on Cortland Avenue, we offer Senior, Youth, Community Organizing and Affordable Housing Services to residents of Bernal Heights.
Did you know that the BHNC was founded in 1978 by a group of community activists who were concerned about uncontrolled, speculative development of the Hill? Did you also know that the BHNC helped to save the library and the bank on Cortland Avenue? The BHNC built Market Heights, Coleridge Park Homes and, presently, Bernal Gateway, making housing affordable for over 300 neighbors. Throughout the years, and with the help of thousands of neighborhood residents, the BHNC has become an integral part of the Bernal Heights Neighborhood.
There are many ways to be a part of BHNC: volunteer in our Senior or Youth programs, take advantage of our housing rehabilitation program, or become a member. Members sit on our committees, participate in actions and elect our board of directors.
This year we have an ambitious goal of recruiting over 600 members. Why not join now to help us achieve this goal? If you join before June 17, 2000, the day of our Annual Congress, you can come to Congress to vote on our Board, and help us to set the agenda for the organization for the next year. Congress is a special day to meet neighbors, have fun and participate in political action. Last year Mayor Willie Brown attended and granted our demand for a new affordable housing development in the Excelsior. This year we hope to tackle the issue of evictions and improving our schools. Together we can make it happen ... because this is our neighborhood!
